Location Guide : Cap Ferret & St Tropez

September 10th, 2014

When it comes to the luxury property market St-Tropez and Cap Ferrat are two of the most glamorous and desirable locations along the entire of the glorious southern French coast, both to visit and to purchase a luxury property. Both offer the very best of a quintessentially French experience, while also offering an amazing array of things to do and places to see, all set in a beautiful and unspoilt environment.

luxury property in cap ferrat and st tropez Unlike some of the more westerly towns that have suffered slightly from over development, both of these locations remain very true to retaining a genuine sense of class and uniqueness that sets them apart. Even better they are at the hub of a region that has plenty of nearby communities that are equally charming and perfect for a day trip, especially for those with a keen interest in art.

St-Tropez has something of a reputation as a millionaire’s playground and the town is wall-to-wall with the trappings of wealth, attracted here by the tranquil pleasure of living in such a gorgeous place. However, for those of us without a seven (or more) figure income, there’s still a great amount to see and do in St-Tropez. Every visitor or new resident will start their time here with the essential walk around the harbour, old town and up the hill to the imposing ancient citadel. It’s quite a fascinating experience to stroll past row after row of huge moored yachts, before turning the corner and walking through the tight cobblestoned streets seemingly from a different time. The stroll up the hill is delightful and you can’t help but turn to admire the ever improving view as you go, with the citadel providing an enlightening lesson in the long and vested history of the town. Just to show that not every resident is a millionaire, a stroll through the Place des Lices shows the everyday side of French life – normal people enjoying a thriving cafe culture, playing games in the square etc. – in the most beautiful of environs.

The Musée de l’Annonciade is a must visit attraction and one of France’s premium galleries with the purpose of showcasing the art from St-Tropez and the surrounding region. Given the popularity of the area with artists throughout history you can imagine that this creates an incredibly impressive display of many different styles, presented thoughtfully so that art novices can also gain appreciation from the works. With excellent coastal pathways and sumptuous surrounding countryside, extensive tennis, diving and boat rental facilities and plenty of smaller galleries and museums to enjoy, you literally can’t put a foot wrong in St-Tropez.

At the furthest easterly point of the Cote d’Azur and approximately 2 hours along the coast from St-Tropez is Cap Ferrat (a short helicopter ride for the affluent), a peninsular that extends out from the foot of the Plateau St. Michel. Cap Ferrat has long been a destination for the famous figures of the world of entertainment, politics and art and retains an enchanting old-world air, beautifully rugged and dotted with some of the most beautiful residences imaginable.

Compared to St-Tropez Ferrat has a very different feel of ostentatious quality, and lends itself brilliantly to walking along the dramatic coastlines while invariably passing the past or current luxury homes of a great range of celebrities. You really can’t help but marvel at how well the villas complement the scenery, and even more recent developments have been expertly blended with the old.

The Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild

Talking of luxury properties, one just happens to be the star attraction to visit in Cap Ferrat. The Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild is an architectural masterpiece with contents to match as it is packed full of incredible tapestries and porcelains. Plus, as should be expected, the view is to die for and best enjoyed from the immaculate gardens that offer a wide variety of fountains plus flowers and plants from around the world. There’s no end of quaint little villages each with their own unique character to visit, and without doubt this is one of the most adorable corners of beautiful France.
