Gonçalo Byrne has a vast portfolio of work, which has several time been awarded on a national and international level. His production has shown particular focus on the areas of heritage and culture.

A University Professor, invited in both Portugal and abroad, in 2005 he received the title of honoris causa from the faculty of Architecture of Lisbon Technical University and has been granted by the President of the Republic, the Grand Order of Santiago de Espada.

He set up his own exclusive office in 1975, and has works built in Braga, Vila do Conde, Viseu, Coimbra, Alcanena, Alcobaça, Lisboa, Almada, Oeiras, Setúbal, Tróia, Castro Verde, Arraiolos, Vidigueira, Lagos, Funchal, Évora, Trancoso and Belgium/Louvain.

Amongst his work, which is varied in terms of scale, theme and program, a noteworthy example is his recent intervention in the Monastery at Alcobaça and the surrounding area, the headquarters of the government of Vlaams-Brabant Province in Louvain, Belgium, the APL Maritime Traffic Control Tower in Lisbon, the Rectory at the University of Aveiro, Faro Theatre, and the National Machado de Castro Museum, currently under construction.

In the area of urban planning he had carried out, amongst other projects, Detailed Plans for the area surrounding the Ajuda National Palace in Lisbon, the Alta Universitária (University Area) in Coimbra, the Cava de Viriato, as part of Polis Program in Viseu, as well as the plan for the town of Trancoso, as part of Historical Villages of Portugal Programme.

He is currently carrying out significant projects such as Pousada de Estói, in the Algarve, Pousada de Viseu, the new Epal Central Laboratory, and the refurbishment of Trancoso Castle.

He has theoretical work published in national and foreign publications, having also had exhibitions in Buenos Aires, Catania, Como, Lisbon, Ljubljana, Luca, Messina, Milan, New York, Padua, Pamplona, Oporto, Rio de Janeiro, Rosario, San Marino, Sao Paulo, Trevi and Venice.
