Location Guide – Costa del Sol – Estepona & Sotogrande

Estepona and Sotogrande are two of the most idyllic communities to grace the Costa del Sol, both with their own very different histories and equally interesting stories to tell. Whereas Estepona has many hundreds of years’ worth of history accumulated within its historic old town, Sotogrande was developed in the 1960s to be a fashionable and luxurious private community. Today, residents of both are able to enjoy an impressive range of activities, fiestas, and events throughout the year, with the luckiest occupying some of the finest luxury real estate in the whole of Spain.

With only 25km separating the communities its little effort to travel between the two, making it easy to enjoy the quite different charms that each has to offer. Of course, throughout the year, they both enjoy an average of 322 days of beautiful sunshine, along with the immaculate beaches, water sports centres, marinas and everything a seaside enthusiast could ever wish for. There’s plenty of opportunity for sports such as golf, tennis and horse riding to name just three. But, what is it that makes both Estepona and Sotogrande really stick out from the crowd?

Starting with Estepona, visitors will find this ancient town a real delight; enclosed by picturesque hills that lead down to marinas and beaches. Some of the finest villas for sale in Spain are to be found here amongst picture perfect plazas that are home to fiestas throughout the year. There’s a real sense of community to be found here, with public events throughout the year – particular highlights being the feast of San Isidro in May and the Estepona fair in July when the whole town seems to take a week long holiday! As an upmarket destination, Estepona enjoys a much more relaxed feel compared to other towns along the Costa del Sol, and with seven golf courses in the area it’s an ideal place for those who enjoy their sport in the sunshine.

Heading a little north along the coast brings us to Sotogrande which is often considered to have the very finest luxury homes in the whole of Europe. As mentioned above, this community was built from scratch fifty years ago and landscaped in such a careful way that the villas blend seamlessly among the many palm trees. As a consequence of this, Sotogrande is a truly luxurious destination and home to many of the international ‘jet-set’ throughout the year. The marina alone is a sight to behold, and naturally is home to a wide range of superb restaurants and hotels. However behind all the glitz, Sotogrande also enjoys beautiful natural surroundings, including national parks that are excellent for walking, cycling or riding along.

While there are plenty of luxury properties for sale in Spain, make no mistake that both of these thriving and unique towns offer something truly special for residents, second home owners and visitors alike.
